The Saudi intention to execute Murtaja Qureiris is a major test for President Trump

The United States and Saudi Arabia are close allies. Saudi Arabia, Turkey and Israel are the closest US allies in the region. However, their human rights record undermines the global position of the United States as a beacon of freedom and liberty.

The specific case for Murtaja Qureiris must be a cause of concern for both President Trump and his senior advisor, Jared Kushner. Both of them have made strengthening military and economic ties with Saudi Arabia as an important part of their administration. This policy is in keeping with previous US administrations.

However, when 18-year old Saudi political dissidents are sentenced for execution for protest activities they undertook as 10-year olds, it reflects very poorly on both Saudi Arabia and the United States.
